other departments in this year's trip as we expend the services
provided and the educational opportunities for USF students. Check

In March, 2005, we returned to Tacna to focus on upgrading and configuring the labs at Miguel Pro and Cristo Rey, and also to teach classes on the use of technology in the classroom. (see the trip page for more details.) At this point, both schools have Internet access via a local DSL provider and are well on their way to bridging the digital divide!

Satellite Internet Planned for March 2005

23 July 2004

One of the schools, Miguel Pro, is still without high-speed Internet. In conjunction with the Peruvian government, USF hopes to provide Miguel Pro with satellite Internet during the March 2005 trip. The government will give a free connection to a school that has the hardware to receive it; we are tentatively planning to acquire that hardware and bring it down with us in March.

USF Students Set Up Computers at Two Tacna Schools

March 2004

USF Computer Science students, professors, and alumni teamed up with University Ministries to improve the technology at two schools in Tacna, Peru. We visited two K-12 schools, Cristo Rey and Miguel Pro, where we installed approximately 100 computers, refurbished existing computers, and networked both schools.

Two USF professors, David Wolber and Chris Brooks, accompanied nine USF students to Tacna, Peru for a week during spring break. The project was initiated by USF alumni Alberto Yepez and Teresa Win. Alberto grew up in Tacna and attended Cristo Rey.

"Bridging the digital divide"?

This is a Service Learning project conducted by the University of San Francisco Computer Science department and led by Professors Chris Brooks and David Wolber.

Our mission is to help bridge the 'digital divide' by providing local nonprofits with computer support and troubleshooting.

The digital divide refers to the unequal distribution of information
technology, along with the education and skills to effetively use this
technology. We are currently in the midst of a profound social,
cultural and economic transformation, thanks to information technology
and the Internet, and it is essential that all the world's citizens
have the chance to benefit from this transformation.

Also, This helps achieve USF Mission of "educating hearts and minds" by providing our students both with hands-on 'real-world' experience and an appreciation of the importance and value of service to the community.
