The Schools

We're working with two schools in Tacna: Colegio Cristo Rey and Colegio Miguel Pro. Both schools are Jesuit schools that were established by Father Fred Green, S.J.

Colegio Cristo Rey

Cristo Rey

Colegio Cristo Rey was the first Jesuit school in Tacna. It's an all boys K-11 private school, although many students still depend on state funding to attend.

Project sponsor Alberto Yepez graduated from Cristo Rey.

During the first trip, we set up around 45 computers at Cristo Rey, configured a network, and refurbished several of the older computers to make a lab for kindergarten and preschool kids.

When we returned in June, Cristo Rey had acquired high speed Internet and set up a more advanced network. We helped troubleshoot some network problems and taught several classes on web design, and worked with teachers on better integrating the computers and software into their classes.

In March, 2005, we installed a wireless antenna at Cristo Rey to provide Internet access to outlying buildings, and also taught classes for both students and teachers to help them use computers more effectively.

In 2006, we upgraded the machines in th Cristo Rey kindergarten, helped diagnose problems with the wireless network, and taught classes for the teachers on the use of the Moodle course management system, as well as Google Earth. We also taught the students to set up personal blogs using LiveJournal.

Colegio Miguel Pro

Located in the Habitat for Humanity project in Tacna, Miguel Pro is a coed K-11 school. It's dependent on state funding and private donations for support, as it's a private school but most of the families who send their students there have little or no disposible income.

During the first trip, we set up around 45 computers at Miguel Pro, and created a complete Intranet.

When we returned in June, we helped to configure the network for better security and usability, and provided technical training for the local administrators. We also demonstrated the new network to the teachers, and taught classes about commonly used applications.

In March 2005, we reconfigured the network to support Miguel Pro's recent acquisition of DSL service. This included setting up accounts, configuring DNS and DHCP, setting up a firewall, and installing and configuring antivirus and spyware removal programs.

Cristo Rey

In March 2006, we set up new computers in the kindergarten, refurblished the computers in the (previously little-used) second-floor lab, and taught classes to the teachers on the use of Moodle, Google Earth, and PowerPoint. As with Cristo Rey, we also offered a class on blogging for the Miguel Pro students.
