I grew up outside
Madison,
WI. After high school, I went to
Penn
State for two years and then returned to the
University of Wisconsin, where I
received a B.A. in English and a J.B.A. in Journalism. During this
time, I was also a cab driver for
Union Cab, one of the nation's largest worker-owned
cooperatives. This is where I met my wife,
Holly. (She was also a driver.) Holly and I
moved to
San
Francisco, where I eventually received an M.S. in Computer Science
from
San Francisco State
University. While I was at SFSU, I also had the opportunity to
work at
Lawrence Berkeley
Laboratory. In 1997, we moved to
Ann Arbor, Michigan, to
attend graduate school at
the
University of Michigan. I worked
with
Ed Durfee in
the
AI Lab and, in my free
time, was a DJ and Production Director
at
WCBN. I received my Ph.D. in 2002
from the
Electrical Engineering
and Computer Science Department.
I currently live in San Francisco and am an Associate Professor in the
Computer Science Department at
the
University of San
Francisco. (No, not
that one.
Or
that
one. Or
that one.) I live
with
Holly,
Flannery,
and
Charlie. We still
miss
Fran and
Leah.
