Traveling to Washington, D.C.

By plane

The Washington Metropoitan Area is served by three major airports: Washington-Reagan National Airport (DCA) is 6 stops away from GWU on the Blue METRO line. METRO bus and Washington Flyer services are available from Dulles Airport (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is accessible via MARC trains. SuperShuttle services all three airports.

By train

Amtrak serves Washington, D.C.'s Union Station. Union Station is also serviced by METRO rail (Red line).

By car

The following are directions to the GWU Foggy Bottom Campus University Parking Garage. More information about parking is available below.

From North:
  • Interstate 95 South to Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) toward Silver Spring/Northern Virginia
  • Take Exit 33, heading south on Connecticut Avenue for about 9 miles
  • Turn right onto Florida Avenue (just past the Washington Hilton) and then turn left immediately onto 21st Street
  • Turn right on I Street
  • The visitor entrance to the University Parking Garage is on the left between 22nd and 23rd Streets
From Northwest:
  • Interstate 270 to Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) toward Silver Spring
  • Take Exit 33, heading south on Connecticut Avenue for about 9 miles
  • Follow directions as shown above in "From North"
From West:
  • Interstate 66 and Route 50 both connect with the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge
  • Cross the bridge and exit left at E Street, then again at Virginia Avenue
  • Bear left, following signs for 23rd Street
  • Turn right on 23rd Street and continue a few blocks to campus
  • Turn right on I Street
  • The visitor entrance to the University Parking Garage is on the right between 22nd and 23rd Streets
From South:
  • Interstate 95 to Interstate 395, Arlington Memorial Bridge Exit
  • Cross the bridge and bear left at the Lincoln Memorial
  • Turn left onto 23rd Street, NW, and follow directions as shown above in "From West"
Parking at GWU

On-campus street parking is available, but it is limited and time limits (mostly two-hour) are strictly enforced. For this reason, visitors are encouraged to park in the University Parking Garage. The entrance is located on I Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets. The charge is $16 per day or for a portion of the day (subject to change).


Getting around

Rail & buses

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority provides rail and bus services within the District and in nearby suburbs (these are the METRO trains and buses). Outside the reach of METRO, MARC trains serve Maryland commuters, and VRE commuter trains service Virginia. GWU is easily accessible via public transportation: Foggy Bottom Station on the Blue and Orange METRO lines, and Farragut North Station on the Red line serve the University's main campus.

Taxis in Washington are typically easy to find at the local airports, Union Station, and in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. A number of companies operate in the District; a few are listed below, and a calculator for estimated total fare can be found here.
