Megan Wachs - Tuesday 7/17, 12noon
I'm a 3rd year PhD student at Stanford University, studying Electrical
Engineering. I got my undergrad degree at Brown University in Rhode
Island. My main interest is computer architecture, and I'm currently
studying how to make it easy for people to design a computer for a
specific task. I also am also working on a device which will allow
neuroscientists to study brain activity in rats. When I'm not in the
lab I like to be outside, whether running or swimming or just reading
books under the trees. Also, I like to make quilts.
Deb Agarwal - Thursday 7/19, 10AM
Deb Agarwal is a Staff Scientist in the Computational Research Division at
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory(LBNL). Deb's areas of research interest
include cybersecurity, collaborative tools, secure and reliable multicast
communication protocols, scientific dataservers, and network protocols. She is
the head of the Distributed Systems Department and the group lead for the
Cybersecurity and Network Research group at Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory. Deb earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.
Her MS and PhD are from University of California, Santa Barbara in Computer
Engineering.
Cecilia Aragon - Thursday 7/19, 10AM
Cecilia Aragon is a computer scientist at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory and the software group lead and architect
for the Nearby Supernova Factory, the largest supernova search
currently in operation. Her research interests lie in
visualization, image processing, and visual analytics. She
received her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of
California, Berkeley and her B.S. in mathematics from the
California Institute of Technology. She has over 20 years of
experience in the computing field, including research, software
development, and team building and management experience.
She was also the founder and CEO of a small aviation company,
an airshow and test pilot, aerobatic champion, and medalist at
the World Aerobatic Championships, the Olympics of aviation.

Ann Almgren - Thursday 7/19, 10AM
Ann Almgren
is a staff scientist in the
Computational Research Division
at
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab,
working in computational fluid dynamics.
She focuses primarily on numerical simulation of low-speed fluid flow,
such as that in the very early stages of a Type Ia supernova
prior to ignition. Her research interests are in the development
and implementation of specialized algorithms that
exploit the mathematical character of the equations and run
efficiently on thousands of processors.
She earned her Ph.D. in 1991 in the
Mechanical Engineering Department
at U.C. Berkeley, then spent one year as a visitor at the
Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ.
Following that she worked in the Applied Math Group
at
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,
moving with her research group to LBL in 1996.
Ann is married to fellow researcher John Bell, and
has identical twin daughters and a son in elementary school, and two
older step-children. Her main interest beyond work and family is
soccer, both coaching and playing.
Kylie Owen - Thursday 7/19, 1PM
Kylie Owen has worked in the IT industry for over ten years. Graduating from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, Kylie initially developed her project and people management skills working for the New South Wales Government. Her transition into IT managment began at a small Sydney startup followed by leading software application deployments in Australia's second largest Service Provider.
The oppourtunity to manage the creation of the first i-Home (broadband enabled home) in Australia introduced an unsuspecting public to the wonders of the "internet fridge" brought Kylie to Cisco Systems.
Her various roles at Cisco have included managing the deployment of the largest broadband ATM network in Australia and several Global software application deployments.
In 2000, Kylie joined Cisco's internal IT department and now manages an international team that owns the strategy behind handling the 350,000 support calls her team receives every quarter. Kylie has worked extensively in the Asia Pacific region and has recently re-located from Sydney to San Francisco with her husband and 18 month old son.
Deb Volk - Thursday 7/19, 2PM
Deborah Volk is the founder of Identigral, Inc., a systems integrator specializing in Identity Management Solutions. She began her career in Identity Management when she started working for Entrust in 2002. She joined Thor Technologies in 2003 and quickly developed a passion and expertise in Oracle Identity Manager.
She has over 12 years of experience in Information Technology. Prior to working at Entrust, Deborah was a defense contractor for DARPA. She also was the Technical Director of the Smart Card Forum.
Deborah has a BS in Physics, a BS in Computer Science, and a BA in Mathematics from Wofford College.
Stephanie Oshita - Friday 7/20, 10AM
Stephanie Ohshita is Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and
Management at the University of San Francisco (USF). Her research

problemsÑfrom global climate change to local air pollutionÑand
combines engineering with tools from political economy and
organizational theory. She specializes in cleaner energy technology
diffusion, policy design and implementation, and development
cooperation, with a geographical focus on Japan and China. Her
recently co-authored book, Cooperative Climate: Energy Efficiency
Action in East Asia, is available from the International Institute for
Sustainable Development (IISD).
Prior to joining USF, Professor Ohshita worked as a consultant to
government and industry in the U.S. and Japan in the areas of air
pollution, climate change, environmental risk assessment, and
environmental policy. She holds a SB in chemical engineering from
