  1. Please consider making an appointment to go to the writing center to discuss your write-up for Project 1. I will deduct points for poor grammar.
  2. Following are several graphing tools you may consider using to generate the graphs for Project 1:
  3. Take a look at the example write-up posted on the web page. Yours will be longer and contain more detail. It may also contain figures demonstrating your implementation. However, you may follow the structure and style of the example provided. The example also includes the tex file, which may prove helpful.

Project 1 asks you to simplify implementation details in order to give you ample time to run experiments, generate (nice!) graphs, and complete a thorough write-up. However, extra credit may be awarded for exceptional extra work. Warning: extra credit will not be awarded unless you have done an exceptional job meeting the basic requirements of the project. Do not neglect the graphs and write-up in favor of spending more time on the implementation.

  1. The syllabus originally indicated that Project 1 would be an individual project. It has been updated to indicate that Project 1 can be completed in groups of 2 or 3. Please send me email with your project group by Friday, January 26, 2007.
  2. To accommodate the large number of students in the class, the format of the class will be slightly modified. The class will be split into two groups of students. During most class periods, one group will meet in Kudlick to discuss the assigned papers and the other group will meet in the lab (HR530 or HR535) to work on the current project assignment. Students will read 2 papers in preparation for the paper discussion and all students will submit summaries of both papers by Monday at 5:30pm. We will alternate weeks such that Group 1 will meet for discussion on Monday one week and Wednesday the next week. There will be a few weeks during which we will all meet as a group to work on and discuss the project assignments, or do other activities. You are still responsible for being in class or in the lab during every class period!
  3. There may also be (hopefully, there will be!) select class periods during which guest lecturers will present current work in the area of Internet Systems Research. No summaries will be due for those classes.
  4. Papers for the second half of the semester will be selected from the list of candidate papers. Feel free to suggest papers to add to the list or indicate papers you are not interested in reading.
