USF Computer Science students, professors, and alumni are teaming up with
University Ministry to improve the technology at two schools in Tacna,
Peru.
The project was initiated by USF alum Alberto Yepez, who grew up in Tacna and
has been helping the schools he attended there for many years. This spring
break,
Alberto is coming to Tacna armed with ten bright and energetic students, three
computer science professors, and a shipment of computer equipment. The team will
install new computers, network equipment and educational software, and help
train the students and employees to make use of the new labs. The plan is to
return to Tacna on a yearly basis.

The Peru trip is an extension of the USF Computer Science Department's Community Connections program. Under the direction of Professor Chris Brooks, students in this program have been helping provide free computer access and training to underprivileged people in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. The program is part of USF's mission to educate both hearts and minds, and to expose students to public service and social justice issues.
