This course introduces common data visualization techniques and design principles using python with the seaborn, bokeh, plotly, and networkx packages. Students design and implement interactive, multivariate, text, hierarchical, network, and temporal data visualizations. Restriction: Restricted to Graduate level; Restricted to Analytics Majors

Obtaining the data



For this assignment, we will explore data related to the Winter Olympics. Download the data in CSV or JSON format. Make sure to get the README file that contains information about the data.

Storytelling with Tableau



  • For this part of the assignment, explore the data using Excel/Tableau and create a storyboard. The storyboard must contain a series of visual representations. Remember to explore the data and try to find a storyline or two first. The dataset has many different storylines in it that may be worth exploring.
  • Include at least 3-5 visual representations and remember the principles of effective data visualization especially with respect to appropriate use of color and annotations to draw a viewer's attention to important aspects of the story.
  • You may add annotations as necessary to draw a viewer's attention to aspects of your visual representations.
  • Submitting the assignment



    • Create a report that contains the storyboarding with Tableau visuals.
    • The report must be written in a third person narrative style
    • The Title for your report must be "Assignment 1 - Brief title for the report"
    • Include your name on the first page as well as in the header of the document
    • The Tableau part of the report must have the following sections:
      • Context
      • Motivation (discuss choice of visualizations used)
      • Approach (steps taken to eliminate clutter, draw attention to regions of interest)
      • Take Home Message
    • Submit the report on Canvas as a PDF
