For your service learning, you'll need to spend 25-30 hours at a community partner's site. Sign up for one of the slots listed below BEFORE Wednesday, January 29 by emailing the instructor.
You will offer a weekly workshop for middle school girls for 6-8 weeks based on CS4SF curriculum. You will help with curriculum development, lab setup (first 1~2 weeks), and teach the sessions (6-8 weeks).
They offer one-on-one tech tutoring to a population of mainly latina immigrant women ages 40-65. They are looking for volunteers that can clearly communicate basic computer skills in Spanish and help clients to gain confidence and the skills necessary to edit resumes, search for job opportunities and email employers. They are also developing workshop on emailing and finding directions on smartphones. Here is a video describing their tech program.
From the week of February 3 to the week of April 28:Tenderloin Technology Lab serves residents in Tenderlon and has a long history of collaboration with USF. They need some assistants/teachers for our Basic computer skills, intermediate computer skills, individual tutoring and our Saturday workshops. You will be doing one of the following shifts there. Up to 2 people per shift. You will have a lot more opportunities to lead the class in the afternoon and Saturday courses than the morning courses. You will TA for the morning courses since Basic computer skills students are beginners and need more one-on-one help. On Fridays (morning and afternoon), you will be helping in the individual tutoring sessions which might be a good challenge for you.
