Welcome to Math Immersion 2009!

The aim of this course is to help DC Teaching Fellows develop and improve the math skills they will need in their future positions at the front of a math classroom, in addition to preparing them to meet the certification requirements for secondary math teachers in D.C. Public Schools. We will cover a range of topics including geometry, calculus, probability, statistics, algebra, and combinatorics, and concurrently work on reasoning skills and proof writing techniques.

The certification requirements for the District of Columbia require that Fellows pass the Praxis II Mathematics Content and the Proofs, Models, and Problems exams given by the Educational Testing Service. This intense two-week course will review all subjects covered by the exams, and we will practice as many problems as possible.

The Content Exam, it is a two-hour, 50 question multiple choice test, and the Proofs, Models, and Problems Exam, it is a one-hour, 4 question constructed-response (i.e., free response) exam. These four multi-part questions consist of one requiring proof writing, one in mathematical modeling, and two moderately elaborate word problems. Both exams cover a variety of topics in mathematics and both require a graphing calculator.

Our first day of class will be Monday, June 1, 2009. Please see the schedule for additional information. You should bring your graphing calculator to class every day.
