Huitzilopochtli

"Hummingbird on the left" is the meaning of this god's name. Huitzilopochtli was god of the sun, and was associated with war, and power. His shrine, occupies, with the shrine of Tlaloc, top of the Templo Mayor. it is seen in duality with the god Tlaloc, who was responsible for rain, and associated with fertility. The shrine was probably adorned with butterflies, which are associated with the sun.

Sacrifices to Huitzilopochtli were carried out in front of the shrine.

No statues seem to have survived, but some written chronicles, by the conquistadors and priests describe the gods, although there are many different representations described. In building this model, I referred to an illustration from the Codex Tovar. Additional description was found in a poem that was quoted from Sahagun's "History of the New Things of Spain".
