Something
Must Be Done for the Lord
"I do not understand how a such a great lord and wise man as you
are has not realised that these idols are not gods, but bad things,
called devils. So I hope you will allow me to place our sign of the
cross here as well as a picture of the Virgin Mary and you will see how
afraid your gods will be." [1]
You have Insulted Our Gods
"Had I known that you would say such dishonourable things, I
would not have shown you my gods. We hold these things to be good, they
bring us health, water, and good crops, rain and, when we need them,
victories, and so we have to sacrifice to them. I request you not to
say other things like that to their dishonour." [1]
Afterword
And within a few weeks of this incident, Cortes and a group of his men
returned to the Temple top, removed a gold mask from one of the idols'
face, and smashed it with a bar while crying "Something must be
done for the Lord!" Shortly thereafter, the temples were rinsed of
blood and the idols removed, never to be seen again by the Spaniards.
The destruction of the temples and the Aztec Empire had begun.
