Our Ceremonial Center
"So, you see that this sacred walled precinct houses our priests
and gods. It is here that is the heart of our city. It is called
Teopan, the place of the gods. All roads from North, South , East, and
West emanate from here. Our great Temple, as you see, faces the west.
It honors two of our greatest deities, Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc.
As we pass through this gate you will see that there is a great calmecac on the north side. Here our children are schooled in the arts of religion, astronomy, our history, and many other suitable subjects. Our priests live within, tending the gods and teaching the children.
You will see the Tlachtli or ball court straight ahead, which is where our sport is practiced by men who devote many years of training to its perfection."
The
splendid towers!
"Yes, this is most admirable. I believe that this walled precinct
is so large that it could house 15,000 souls. And this great temple in
the distance is indeed higher than our church in Seville. The
workmanship on these stones and wood is remarkable, everything is
carved into borders with birds, fishes, flowers and monsters!
You say that all of these temples are dedicated to different gods? Please show me your gods and priests. I would like to see from what they are made."
