Textbook Recommended: Network Security Essentials 6th Edition. Other reference materials will be provided through the course website.

Course Goals and Objective
Privacy and security are one of the hottest and most serious issues these days. This course will cover a wide range of topics to prepare you for the privacy and security issues and concerns you will face in professional environments. The goal of this course is not to teach you how to encrypt a message using any particular encryption method, but to teach you to think analytically when you make privacy and security choices.

Assignments and Labs
There will be weekly assignments or labs on most weeks. Refer to the Labs and Assignments tab for details. They are due at 11:55pm on their due dates, and the submission is through Assignments tab in Canvas. The deadlines are firm, i.e. there is no late day policy.

Grading
Your final grade will be calculated this way:

  • Participation and quizzes: 10%
  • On-paper Assignments: 20%
  • On-computer Labs: 30%
  • Midterm (in-class on Thursday, March 6): 20%
  • Final (10am on Tuesday, May 16): 20%
You may earn as must as 10% doing extra-credit projects. Extra-credit opportunities are announced throught the semester in class. Your final grade will be assigned as follows:
100 - 93.0 - A
92.9 - 90.0 - A-
89.9 - 87.0 - B+
86.9 - 83.0 - B
82.9 - 80.0 - B-
79.9 - 77.0 - C+
76.9 - 73.0 - C
72.9 - 70.0 - C-
